Inner Child Journeys

An inner child journey

Healing the younger self

We all have an inner child—a part of us that didn’t fully mature, didn’t get our needs met or felt unloved. This younger self sometimes pops up or temporarily takes over from our adult self. It happens when words or events trigger us. In these moments, we know we’re being childish, petulant and generally throwing our toys out of the pram, but often we don’t know how to step out of this behaviour. Sometimes, this is due to childhood trauma. Sometimes it’s not just moments in time, but more significant chunks of our life, which can cause havoc for our adult self.

Great care is taken when working with the inner child. We move slowly and tenderly into this work. After the visualisation—described below—people often feel a huge sense of relief. The inner child now feels safe knowing the adult in fully in charge.

Guided Visualisation

Inner child healing is a guided visualisation to find your younger self who resides within your body. When I ask how old the child appears, the answer is usually between 4–8 years old. The journey introduces the adult self to the child and helps them find a safe space for the inner child to sleep.

Thanking the inner child for all they have done, the adult self reassures the inner child that they will be looked after. The healing journey ends with campfire conversations which typically include family members or partners. This process may sound strange—yet it is a powerful way to begin the healing process of childhood trauma. If visualising does not come easily to you, then EFT can help you reach a similar release of emotional turmoil.
